Pakse

The gateway to southern Laos

At the meeting point of the Mekong and Xe Don Rivers, Pakse is the main gateway to southern Laos. The city is an important transport hub, but its real appeal lies beyond the centre, where the landscape rises towards the Bolaven Plateau and the Mekong opens into the vast waterways of the 4,000 Islands.

From Pakse, travellers can explore highland coffee plantations, dramatic waterfalls, ancient Khmer temples and quiet riverside villages. It is also a natural starting point for exploring southern Laos by motorbike.

What is Pakse known for?

Pakse is best known as the gateway to the Bolaven Plateau, Champasak and the 4,000 Islands.

The city itself can be explored in a day, but most travellers use Pakse as a base or starting point for exploring the wider region.

The surrounding area offers some of southern Laos’s most distinctive landscapes, from cool mountain plateaus and coffee farms to powerful waterfalls and the ancient ruins of Vat Phou.

Things to do in Pakse

Visit Wat Phousalao

The enormous golden Buddha of Wat Phousalao sits high above Pakse on the opposite side of the Mekong.

The temple complex provides expansive views over the city, rivers and surrounding countryside. Sunset is a particularly atmospheric time to visit as the Mekong catches the changing light below.

Explore the Bolaven Plateau

The Bolaven Plateau rises above the surrounding lowlands and is famous for waterfalls, coffee plantations and cooler mountain landscapes.

The area is best explored over several days, with popular stops including Tad Fane, Tad Yuang and Tad Lo.

Travelling by motorbike gives you the freedom to follow the roads between waterfalls and villages at your own pace.

Visit Vat Phou

About 45 kilometres south of Pakse, the ancient temple complex of Vat Phou stands at the foot of Mount Phou Kao.

The site predates Angkor and was later developed as a major Khmer religious complex. Its stone structures, reservoirs and processional avenue stretch across the landscape towards the mountain.

Vat Phou is part of the Vat Phou and Associated Ancient Settlements within the Champasak Cultural Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Discover the 4,000 Islands

Further south, the Mekong spreads across the landscape to create Si Phan Don, better known as the 4,000 Islands.

Don Det and Don Khone are the best-known islands for travellers, with waterfalls, cycling routes, boat trips and a slower pace of life beside the river.

Pakse is the main transport gateway for reaching the islands.
